Of course, we have to include the author of our November book club pick. Both books have some magical elements in them, so you know I’m on board with this conversation. Jan Carson is from Ireland herself and her novel The Fire Starters is about a doctor who fears that his new-born daughter isn’t as harmless as she seems. His latest novel is set in Ireland centered around a retired IRA fighter. Keenan is a Scottish journalist and novelist who loves to write about politics and punk. He’ll be talking with Jan Carson, both authors from around the U.K.
It’s called Show Them a Good Time and was praised heavily by Sally Rooney.ĭon’t confuse this David Keenan with the musician, because you’ll end up in a very different place. Nicole Flattery’s first book is a collection of short stories with an amazing cover. His latest novel Night Boat to Tangiers is heavy on stream-of-consciousness and rhythm so prepare for an interesting reading. Kevin Barry is an Irish writer who likes to experiment with style and story. The conversation between Kevin Barry and Nicole Flattery will be hosted by Henk van Straten. And Nina Weijers is a Dutch author who wrote a new book about an author who gets obsessed with her new house in Amsterdam. Kevin Breathnach is an Irish writer of literary essays who shows with ease that the genre is still alive and kicking. She writes fairytale-like stories and was the youngest nominee ever of the Man Booker Prize. Daisy Johnson is the English author of Fen and Everything Under.
One of these is between Daisy Johnson, Nina Weijers and Kevin Breathnach. Saturday is quite packed with authors, so we even get some trio interviews. Een schelmenroman which is about a man with many faces set in Europe of 1789. This autumn his new book comes out titled D e heilige. Martin Michael Driessen is a Dutch author who started writing after a successful career in the theatre. Stefánsson’s The Story of Ásta is about a girl who seemed to have been born for misfortune and promises to be another Icelandic classic. Having recently visited Iceland, I can’t not recommend you see Jón Kalman Stefánsson in conversation with Martin Michael Driessen. The Dutch version did come out already and De Menselijke Maat is a tale of love and friendship that features a host of people being tested by the times they live in. Camurri is Italian and his debut novel still needs to be translated in English. His book In the Distance was shortlisted for the Pulitzer and is a ‘northern’ western that strays into the realm of magical realism and is set during the Gold Rush in Alaska. Diaz is from Argentina and now lives in New York.
Our final recommendation on Friday – although there is much more to see – is the conversation between Hernan Diaz and Roberto Camurri. The black comedy almost writes itself, but no one does it as well as Jacobson. The woman has a special ability to drive anyone up a wall, even with her Alzheimer’s while the man is a real-life Don Juan. His most recent book Live a Little is about the adventures of two ancient Londoners who meet near the end of their lives.

Jacobson is a British-Jewish author who knows how to write drama and comedy. He’ll be talking with Micha Wertheim and interviewed by Remco van Rijn. If you can’t make it during the evening, but you do have time during the day, then go see Howard Jacobson in the early afternoon. If you’re a nature and technology buff, this evening is made just for you. A wide range of people will converse with each other that evening, discussing digital naturalism, non-humans and all kinds of other interesting things. Ol’ Hallows Eve is dedicated to Border Sessions, which will be an evening of nature writing, artists and future thinkers.

And as an added bonus, anyone who attends the event will receive a free Dutch copy of A Place of Greater Safety. Instead of talking mostly about her newest book, Mantel will revisit her first novel A Place of Greater Safety, which focuses on the French Revolution. The world is eagerly awaiting the final part of her Thomas Cromwell trilogy which is set to come out in 2020.
